The club today

The club is open and private, and a board of members runs it. It opens Tuesday through Sunday and closes on Mondays, with hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in summer and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in winter. Alongside memberships it lists driving-range programs, lessons, a pro shop, dining, and space for banquets, weddings and corporate outings.

If you want to play, start with the club itself. Wikipedia and GolfN both list Fort Washington as private, and its website doesn't offer public tee times, so ask the club about membership options.

The club reached its centennial in 2023, and Valley PBS marked it with the documentary "Fort Washington Country Club: 100 Years," released on July 11, 2023. College golf comes here too. Fresno State's Nick Watney Invitational was played here on September 25–26, 2023, and the women's Fresno State Classic brought 11 teams and 70 players on March 2–3, 2026.

The course

A William Watson layout, under the eucalyptus

William Watson designed the original course in 1923. It opened with 9 holes, dirt fairways and sand greens; today it plays 18 holes to a par of 72. The club's own course guide singles out the 14th, its signature hole, with a pond and a view of the clubhouse; the downhill par-3 7th, with a steep drop from tee to green; and the 15th, played from a raised tee over a pond. The guide also points out the course's large eucalyptus trees and the estate homes along the right side of the 9th.

There are 4 sets of tees. Adding up the club's scorecard gives totals of about 5,640, 6,160, 6,460 and 6,730 yards. The USGA figures cited by Wikipedia are 6,728 yards with a course rating of 72.8 and a slope of 129.

History

From sand greens to state opens

The club formed in 1923 on 126 acres near the Fort Washington schoolhouse, and the first ball was hit on June 17 of that year. The club says its name was inspired by a pioneer-era fort. The Fresno County Library's index of historical sites backs that up with a Fort Washington site near Copper Ave and Fort Washington Rd, set up in 1850 as a ferry base and washed away in the 1852 flood.

The club took its current name, Fort Washington Golf and Country Club, in 1970 and built a new clubhouse in 1991. Its tournament record includes 8 California State Opens, the 1992 Ben Hogan Tour Fresno Open and the 2001 U.S. Mid-Amateur, which it co-hosted with San Joaquin Country Club. Since its centennial it has hosted Fresno State's men's and women's college events.
